This page provides useful information for living in Mitaka Dormitory for Mitaka Dormitory students/those who are preparing to move into Mitaka Dormitory. We will update it from time to time, so please check it out if you have any problems.
(For new residents)
What to do when moving in
If you want to send your luggage to Mitaka Dormitory, you can send it on the date you plan to move in.After arriving at Mitaka Dormitory, first go to the common building to receive move-in guidance and keys. Before heading to your room, please make sure to deposit a certain amount of money into the prepay machine in front of the office (if you don't do this, you won't be able to use electricity or water. The amount is up to you, but it's around ¥12,000, keeping in mind that the rent will be deducted). You can transfer your residence card at Mitaka City Hall, but please be careful as it tends to be very crowded during the moving season.
How to pay housing expenses/water and utility expenses
Mitaka Dormitory's unique pre-pay system will be used to pay housing expenses/utilities. Please make your deposit in cash using the deposit machine located in the common building. The average deposit amount is approximately ¥10,000 to ¥15,000 per month. You can check the remaining amount on the monitor located next to the entrance of each room, and if this becomes negative, the hot water and electricity in your room will be cut off at that point. The basic fee of 8,850 yen/month is generally deducted on the 1st of every month, so be sure to make a deposit at the end of the month. Utility charges will be deducted at any time according to usage (electricity: 5kw/¥100, hot water: 520L/¥100, air conditioning: 460 minutes/¥100).
How to use laundry
There are 3 washing machines and 2 dryers each on the 2nd and 3rd floors of each building, and they are available 24 hours a day. The washing machine costs 30 minutes (once) for ¥100, and the dryer costs 30 minutes for ¥100. Please note that you can only use 100 yen coins. You will also need to provide your own detergent. There is no fabric softener inlet and you have to add it at a specified time, so if you don't want to worry about it, we recommend using a detergent that contains fabric softener.
How to throw away garbage
You can dispose of garbage at Mitaka Dormitory 24 hours a day (excluding bulky garbage). In accordance with Mitaka City's separation methods, garbage must be separated into combustible garbage, non-combustible garbage, plastics, hazardous garbage, plastic bottles/cans/jars, and recyclable garbage. You can use either the Mitaka City-designated bags or the bags you have on hand to take out the garbage.
Using
Internet
As of March 2024, there are two main ways to use the Internet in your room at Mitaka Dormitory: 1) Sign a contract with Wako Tsushin, and 2) Use your own pocket Wi-Fi or tethering. There is a wired internet terminal in the living room, which can be used by signing a contract with Wako Tsushin. The fee is ¥2,800 per month, which must be paid in advance. UTokyo Wi-Fi is available in the common building.
Bicycle parking contract
How/ Fees
For Kichijoji Station: If you wish to use the Musashino City public bicycle parking lot, you will need to apply for the lottery online. In 2024, April usage is decided in March, so if you win the lottery for vacant bicycle parking lots that will be held every month from May onwards, you will be able to use the bicycle parking lot from May. Prices vary from ¥1,600 to ¥2,900/month for city residents/students, depending on the floor and location . For more information, please see the guide issued by Musashino City ( Application_guide_2024_j.pdf (jitensha.jp) ). There are also private bicycle parking lots that do not fall into the above categories, which are listed here ( bicycle parking lots around Kichijoji Station | Musashino City official website (musashino.lg.jp) ). Please note that Kichijoji Station is a popular station and has higher competition than Mitakadai and Kugayama, so be sure to apply early.
For Mitakadai Station: There are multiple bicycle parking lots at Mitakadai Station, but at Mitakadai Bicycle Parking Lot 1, you can use the rooftop space for ¥500/month through a student support campaign. It's on the rooftop, so it's a little difficult to move your bike around, but it's an exceptional price. To sign a contract, you will need to visit the bicycle parking lot and register at the counter. Click here for details: (Regular bicycle use) Municipal bicycle parking lots around Mitakadai Station, availability and application method | Machizukuri Mitaka Co., Ltd. (mitaka.ne.jp)
For Kugayama Station: At Kugayama Station, you will need to use either the Kugayama Minami Bicycle Parking Lot or the Kugayama Nishi Bicycle Parking Lot (although they are close together and the management office is also the same). The price is ¥1,900/month, and the longer the contract period is from 3 months to 6 months, the cheaper the monthly fee will be. To sign a contract, you will need to visit the bicycle parking lot and register at the counter. If you live in Mitaka dormitory
Let's buy this
- Tension rod: Essential especially for people who want to dry their laundry indoors. Larger, more durable items can be purchased at the Olympics. Can also be used as wall storage in the kitchen.
- Curtains: If you don't prepare them before you move in, you'll be living without curtains for a few days after moving in. Please be especially careful if you are moving in on the first floor, as your living space will be completely visible from the outside. Since the windows in your room are small and one window is enough, it's a good idea to buy a set of two windows and share them with someone (there's no harm in wearing two windows by yourself).
- Bath & toilet slippers: Crocs style slippers that can get wet. The floor of the shower room gets wet when I take a shower.
- Toilet paper: I often forget to buy it when I move in. I can't go to the toilet in my room without it.
- Table light: Must buy.
- Insect spray: There is a possibility of insects, especially on the lower floors. There have been cases where G has been seen in hallways and rooms, and there have been cases where millipedes have appeared in large numbers and are found inside when shoes are put on.
- Storage under the kitchen: It would be nice to have a shelf that can be expanded to about three levels.
- Telescopic drainer rack: This kind of thing ( a drainer that can be folded and hung [anniversary festival price: until 3/31] mail order | Nitori Net [Official] Furniture and interior mail order (nitori-net.jp) ). I don't have space for a cutting board in my kitchen, so I use this and place the cutting board on top of it when I cook. Of course, it can also be used to drain dishes.
- IH cooking heater: For people who cook their own meals. There is only one IH stove in the room, so it would be nice to have at least one more when cooking.
- Vacuum cleaners: You can rent them in the common building, but if you have one nearby, cleaning will be easier.
